St. Michael’s House Vision, Mission, Values

St. Michael’s House is one of the largest providers of services and supports to adults and children with intellectual disabilities in Ireland. Operating out of over 170 locations in greater Dublin and with an annual income of €111m, St. Michael’s House supports over 2,000 men, women and children. Supports provided by St. Michael’s House include residential and independent living, clinical services, day and respite supports.

Context

St Michael’s House existing Vision, Mission and Values statements were not in-line with recent developments in person-centred care and the UN Convention of Rights of People with Disabilities.

As part of strategic planning, the organisation had gathered lots of feedback and data from service users and their families, and staff.  The Board needed support to make sense of the feedback, and use this treasure trove of information to develop new Vision, Mission and Values statements.

Our Intervention

We ran an interactive workshop with the Board and the EMT based on the ‘blank page’ approach – seeking fresh input on what these stakeholders identified as the desired future St Michael’s House was working towards, its purpose in achieving that future state, and the ethos under pinning how it delivers its services. These inputs were then compared to the key themes arising from the consultations and feedback from staff, service users and their families to identify areas of commonality and divergence.

A second workshop with the Board and EMT reviewed these insights and agreed some ‘litmus tests’ by which the final Vision, Mission and Values statements should be assessed; these included that they had to be rights-based and that the language had to be accessible and easily understood.

The Result

The finally agreed Vision, Mission and Values statements capture the breadth and complexity of St Michael’s House services in simple, person-centred language. The Mission statement is a direct quote from a service user shared as part of one of the consultations.
