CEO Succession: Identifying NYCI’s next leader

Understanding NYCI’s requirements:

The National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) is a membership-based organisation dedicated to representing and advocating for the youth work sector in Ireland. Through its work, NYCI builds solidarity among voluntary youth organisations, promotes evidence-informed youth work practice, and supports capacity building and professional development across the sector.

Following the announcement that its Chief Executive Officer would retire after 23 years of dedicated service and transformative leadership, NYCI selected 2into3 to partner on the recruitment of a new CEO.

This post required someone who could build upon the organisation’s successes to date, shape its strategic direction and ensure its effective operation with a view to advancing the needs of the sector.

“Working with 2into3 on our CEO recruitment was a very good experience. Their support and guidance throughout the process really helped the process. The team’s approach was warm, professional and collaborative, while being clear, approachable and always available when we needed them. They were highly efficient, kept us on track with timelines, and provided clear advice at every stage. We really appreciated the partnership.”

Board Representative, National Youth Council of Ireland

Our recruitment strategy

2into3 proposed a combined advertised and targeted search for this campaign. In addition to meeting with its Board, 2into3 engaged with NYCI’s senior leadership team and young people who have engaged with NYCI in the past (focus group and survey), to gain a clear understanding of the culture of NYCI and strategic priorities for its next CEO.

Once the campaign launched, 2into3 implemented our executive search strategy, which was underpinned by tailored communications and exploratory conversations designed to engage individuals with the leadership experience required for the role.

The NYCI CEO role requires the following skills and experience:

  • Strategic Leadership with ability to lead Senior Leadership Team and wider staff of 31
  • Stakeholder and Membership Engagement, including with Government Officials
  • Financial Management of a c. €3 million budget
  • Operational Management and Strategic Programme Evaluation
  • Governance and Regulatory Compliance

Particular focus was placed on identifying professionals who demonstrated alignment with the organisation’s values and core principles of meaningful youth participation.

Appointing a mission-aligned CEO

The Board engaged with a diverse and high-calibre pool of candidates, leading to the successful appointment of a CEO with a deep understanding of the value of youth work and a strong commitment to advancing NYCI’s mission. You can read more about this appointment on National Youth Council of Ireland’s website, here.
